This is the MOST critical document for a Veteran and surviving spouse. He/she receives this when discharged from military active duty. This form must be presented for the Veteran to receive military benefits, e.g., a full honors military funeral.
Long before a Veteran dies, the Veteran should obtain an official copy of the DD-214 and secure it on top of the Veteran's last will and letter of instructions.

Veterans must first register at VetVerify.org. In MOST cases you will need to scan and download your DD-214 by following instructions on VetVerify.org.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is a member resource for benefits, including mortgage loans, Health Care to include medical and dental benefits, and education. Also, Memorial Affairs will include burial benefits and internment in National Cemeteries.
With posts located throughout the U.S., the American Legion actively lobbies Congress on behalf of Veterans. They conduct many worthwhile community programs and scholarship programs for members. They also operate a Crisis Hotline and Crisis Fund for members who are victims of disasters.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) motto "No One Does More for Veterans" provides many programs for members and returning veterans. Their strict eligibility requirements limits membership. You can review eligibility requirements on their website.
